Quercus bicolor ‘Beacon’ is a large deciduous shade tree with a broadly pyramidal to oval crown that becomes rounded with age. Selected for its uniform growth, strong branch structure, and excellent adaptability, it is an outstanding choice for urban landscapes, streets, parks, and large residential properties.
The foliage emerges bright green in spring and matures to glossy dark green with silvery-white undersides that shimmer in the breeze. In autumn, the leaves develop attractive yellow, golden-bronze, or bronze-brown tones. In spring, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers appear as male catkins and small female flowers. These are followed by oval acorns with shallow cups that mature in early autumn and provide an excellent food source for birds and wildlife.
Quercus bicolor ‘Beacon’ performs best in full sun and adapts to a wide range of soil conditions, including moist clay, loam, sandy soils, and periodically flooded sites. Once established, it demonstrates excellent tolerance to drought, pollution, heat, and road salt.
