Juniperus Chinensis ‘Old Gold’

Chinese Juniper 'Old Gold'

Compact, slow-growing evergreen conifer with a low, spreading to slightly mounding habit. It forms a dense, irregular shrub over time, with arching, outward-growing branches that create a soft, layered structure in the landscape. The foliage consists of fine, scale-like needles that display a warm golden-bronze coloration, often deeper and more muted than brighter yellow cultivars, giving it a rich, subtle glow year-round.

Its color is most pronounced in full sun, where the golden tones become warmer and more consistent, while in partial shade the foliage tends to shift toward a greener-bronze hue. Compared to other golden junipers, ‘Old Gold’ is valued for its stable, mature-looking coloration and its softer, less flashy golden tone.

It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. It is widely used in rock gardens, slopes, foundation plantings, mass plantings, and low borders, where its spreading habit provides good ground coverage and year-round structure. It also works well in containers, where its warm color adds contrast without being overly bright.
