Acer × freemanii ‘Matador’ is a deciduous ornamental tree with a broad oval to upright habit and a strong central leader. This Freeman Maple cultivar is valued for its vigorous growth, symmetrical branching, excellent adaptability, and brilliant scarlet-red autumn foliage.
The foliage consists of medium to dark green, deeply lobed leaves that combine the attractive shape of Red Maple with the vigor of Silver Maple. In autumn, the foliage develops vibrant shades of scarlet red to deep crimson, providing outstanding seasonal color.
Acer × freemanii ‘Matador’ performs best in full sun and moist, well-drained soils but adapts readily to clay, loam, and sandy soils. It tolerates urban pollution, heat, and occasional wet conditions better than many maples. It is an excellent choice for street plantings, parks, residential landscapes, and large shade tree applications.
