Dwarf Mugo Pine

Evergreen conifer with a dense, low, and broadly spreading mound habit, forming a compact, rounded shrub that is typically wider than tall. It is a classic dwarf selection of Mugo Pine, widely used in landscape design for its stable form, toughness, and low-maintenance character.

The foliage consists of short, stiff, dark green needles grouped in pairs. The needles are dense and slightly twisted, creating a coarse but very durable texture. Compared to the typical subspecies form, ‘Pumilio’ is more compact, more uniform, and generally slower growing.

Pinus mugo subsp. mugo ‘Pumilio’ prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It thrives in poor, sandy, rocky, and acidic soils and is highly tolerant of cold, wind, and exposed sites. Once established, it shows excellent drought tolerance and very high cold hardiness. It is ideal for rock gardens, foundation plantings, mass plantings, slopes, and low evergreen groundcover effects.
