Larix Laricina

American Larch

Deciduous conifer with a slender, upright to slightly open pyramidal habit, forming a light and airy structure in the landscape. It develops a graceful, fine-textured crown that changes with the seasons, giving strong visual interest year-round even when leafless.

The foliage consists of soft, light green needles arranged in clusters along short spurs. In summer it is bright green and fresh-looking, turning a clear golden-yellow in autumn before dropping completely, as this is a deciduous conifer.

Larix laricina prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soils, and is naturally adapted to cold climates, bogs, and cool northern environments. It tolerates wet soils better than most conifers, but does not perform well in dry, hot, or compacted conditions. Once established, it shows excellent cold hardiness and moderate drought tolerance if soil moisture is adequate. It is ideal for naturalized plantings, wet sites, reforestation, and landscape specimens in cooler regions.
