Compact, slow-growing evergreen conifer with a low, spreading to slightly mounding habit. Over time, it forms a dense, somewhat irregular shrub with soft, outward-spreading branches that create a broad, flowing presence in the landscape. The foliage consists of small, scale-like needles with bright golden-yellow new growth, especially vivid in full sun, while the inner foliage remains greener.
Its golden color is most intense in sunny exposures, where the plant also develops its best density. In partial shade, the color softens to a more subdued golden-green tone. Compared to other spreading junipers, the cultivar ‘Gold Star’ is distinguished by a brighter, more consistent golden coloration, adding a strong luminous effect to the landscape.
It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. It is widely used in rock gardens, slopes, mass plantings, foundation plantings, and low ground cover, where its spreading habit provides reliable coverage and year-round ornamental interest. It also works well in large containers, where its soft, outward growth helps soften hard edges and surfaces.
